Points of Interest

1. House Area. There are multiple large sculptures and gardens, including the ‘All-You Need-is-Balls Garden’ near the East Patio. The South Patio is being redone with cofferdam pilings. The barn is a sculpture work area, and the shed houses a welding studio and the outhouse.

2. Parterre Garden. This garden is enclosed with a Yew hedge, has interesting paving, a round pond and a fountain. There is a beginning ‘White Garden.’

3. Straight and Narrow. A pleasing balance of dwarf trees, unusual plant specimens, and sculpture. Note the contorted beech on the left side.

4. Garish Garden. This is designed to be bright and clashing, both with its plant material and sculpture.

5. Swaleway. A spring garden, with many plants flowering during mud season. The rock sculptures are inspired by the cairns leading your way through the mist to the top of Mt. Washington.

6. Funnel Gardens. There are many unusual plants and trees. The gardens end at the ‘Hex Rock’. To the right is a rustic arbor with a panoramic ‘borrowed’ view.

7. Spiral. The twirling motion of the ventilators is repeated in the paving, which is laid in a moss bed.

8. The Allée. A 400’ double Allée of Korean Mountain Ash (Sorbus alnifolia), with a Torii in the center.

9. Baxis. aka The Back Axis. Multiple layers of Miscanthus, Smokebush, and Winterberry flank the nascent Chinese Birch Allée. A double triangular pergola forms a center structure. To the right is the ‘CD Tree.’

10. Dark woods. An untouched spot of pine woods, evoking ancient trees of yesteryore with mysterious figures interspersed.

11. Pond. A wildlife pond filled by surface water only, despite the appearance that the bridge and running stream on the south side creates.

12. Termi. One end of a 925’ axis through the Allée, Torii, Rustic Arbor and the view beyond. The thrones are surrounded by a bosk of Heptacodium. The arched bridge beyond the River Birches makes a nice reflection in the pond.

13. Petit Pond. This started as a vernal pool, and salamanders still make their way to this series of water falls and ponds (the largest of which is 10’ deep). The many Japanese maples make a bright autumn display.

14. Della Rhodia. aka Deer Deli. A dell of Rhododendrons and interesting oaks. The Rhody’s billowing mounded shapes will take a while to be realized.

15. Conetown. A pinetum of about 50 dwarf and standard conifers (i.e. cone bearing plants). Stunning in the snow.

16. Wiggle Waggle. A 200’ watercourse with a ‘Spring House’ at one end and the ‘CopTop’ viewing mound at the other. The rotating farm seats afford a 360° view.

17. GrassAcre. A planting with red, green and blue native grasses (Switchgrass, Prairie Dropseed, Little Blue Stem), to be read as a painting when viewed from the barn. ‘SyncoPeaks’, a layered sculpture of ‘scrims’, evokes mountain horizons.

18. Pate. Undulating privet surround a bald prominence. This area is currently under development.

19. Belgian Fence. This 100’ fence is espaliered in the Belgian style. It is made from 11 different apple trees. Above it is a pseudo-HaHa wall toped with Arborvitae ‘Emerald Green’.

20. Rock Garden. A collection of dwarf conifers and other miniature gems.

21. The Landing. A pergola with a stone patio. It anchors one end of the 800’ axis terminating in the CD Tree.
